Our Story

Ganryu-jima Dojo was founded with a single purpose β€” to preserve and share the traditions of Japanese martial arts in an authentic and welcoming environment. Named after the legendary island of Ganryujima, where the famous duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro took place, our dojo carries the spirit of dedication, discipline, and mastery.

From our earliest days as a small training group, we have grown into a community of practitioners spanning all ages and skill levels. Whether you are taking your first steps on the martial path or deepening a lifelong practice, you will find a place here.

What We Train

Our curriculum draws from classical Japanese martial traditions. Training sessions are led by experienced instructors who emphasize correct form, mindful practice, and respect for tradition. Both private and group classes are available, and we regularly host seminars and public events open to all.

Joining the Dojo

What Training Looks Like

Members train together in a focused, respectful atmosphere. Each session blends warm-ups, fundamentals, partnered drills, and technique work drawn from classical Japanese martial traditions. Beginners follow a dedicated track alongside advanced practitioners, so everyone progresses at a pace that matches their experience.

How and When We Recruit

We open enrolment for new members only once or twice a year, usually at the start of a new training cycle. Keeping intake small lets us give every newcomer the attention they need and preserves the cohesion of the group. Announcements about the next enrolment window are shared on our social channels and in the newsletter.

What to Look Forward To

New members can expect steady progress, a supportive community, and the chance to experience a living martial tradition. Beyond weekly training, we host seminars, public events, and occasional trips β€” opportunities to deepen practice and share the path with fellow students.
